The "rest" stroke involves the plucking hand, most commonly the right hand. The index finger "i", strikes the string and rests against the adjacent string. The "free" stroke does the same initial striking of the string but does not rest against the adjacent string but is free in it's follow through. Try a few free and rest strokes! Use your index and middle fingers, alternating them, index (i), middle (m). For example: i, m, i, m, etc.
